If the Sturms get close to you relatively intact, retreat the riflemen and live to fight another day because the STG44 will shred your guys up close. Equipping a BAR to your squad will also make it much more deadly. USF riflemen are great at long and medium range, and will win that engagement with Sturms. Your best bet is to start the engagement at as long a range as possible from behind cover. Smoke just makes it easier for them to get to you, and they usually are so mobile that grenades won't land. Sturms are deadly at close range, so most players will know to close the distance with your riflemen for the engagement.
